The Fulbright Indigenous Scholarship offers the opportunity to study and research in any academic discipline at any academic institution in the United States.

The Scholarship is open to an Indigenous Australian at one of four different career stages: Postgraduate, Postdoctoral, Professional and Senior Scholar, and includes living, travel and establishment allowances (dependent upon scholarship category).

The scholarship was originally established in cooperation with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) in 1993 and is now supported by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. As fitting with the Fulbright mission, the Fulbright Indigenous Scholarship was established to recognise Indigenous leader's commitment to achieving excellence, while seeking an international perspective and collaboration through their studies/research. Since its inception this Scholarship has supported study and research in areas as diverse as Indigenous: health, economic development, law, the Arts, languages, leadership and issues around colonisation and the maintenance of local traditions, cultures and communities.

Past and Present Fulbright Indigenous Scholars testimonials:

“For my research career I have been able to present to some really diverse audiences and hone my presentation skills as well as get my research out there for people to listen to and interact with” Dr Michelle Evans, research fellow at Melbourne Business School, 2013 Fulbright Indigenous Scholar

“For me the Fulbright has been something I’ve wanted to do for a little while… I’m essentially going to finish my PhD this year, so this Fulbright scholarship gives me the opportunity to do some further research in the field with a comparative analysis between First Nations women and Australia.” Michelle Deshong, 2015 Fulbright Indigenous Professional Scholarship recipient

I’m interested in the link between business and those broader socio-cultural impacts – the success not just of the business but of the community. In the US, I’ll be looking mainly at Native American communities and any similarities or differences with Indigenous enterprise here – whether we can learn from what Native Americans have done in their communities.” Dean Jarett, 2015 Fulbright Indigenous Postgraduate Scholarship recipient
