Modern e-communication is critical to every business and in recognition of this, Adelaide’s largest metropolitan council is offering IT internships to young professionals involved in training programs with Navitas Professional.
Navitas, an ASX Top 100 Company, offers post-university training programs to young professionals who are looking to develop their skills through work experience as they transition from university to the work place.
City of Onkaparinga ICT Manager Tony Bezuidenhout selected two candidates to work with the council through the Navitas internships program.
“We are keen to encourage young people to build careers in the IT industry and I had a number of practical opportunities in mind for the right people,” Tony said.
“We chose two impressive young professionals, Tony Huang and Yifei Pei, who were very passionate about their careers and its very pleasing to be able provide them with a range of individual and team tasks to help them gain valuable hands-on experience,” he said.
Tony and Yifei have been working on a range of projects including reviewing the organisation’s existing E-Communication procedure and making recommendations for improvement; reviewing and suggesting upgrades for PCs in the Old Reynella Neighbourhood Centre; helping create a roster application for the Call Centre team; working on a roster application for the Immunisation team; and reviewing and assessing the new ITIL Change Management system (VersaSRS) module.

“For this project, Tony outlined the whole project to me. I had to arrange the plan, communicate with customers and complete it on time.”
“I also had to multi-task through other roles for example make computer backups and help install a new system for a community centre in Old Reynella,” he added.
Mr Yifei Pei (pictured, right), who is also a graduate from the University of Adelaide (Master of Computing and Innovation) spoke of the value of mentoring.
“Tony is a good supervisor and knows how to foster essential skills for interns,” Yifei said.
“He’s given me appropriate monitoring and feedback, and I’ve gained massively useful experience and business acumen working with him,” he added.
“These young professionals have already performed well in the workplace and my favourable first impressions continue to grow.” Tony said.
“They’ve drawn on their existing experiences when faced with challenges and not been afraid to ask questions when they needed clarification – It’s been an excellent experience all round,” he said.
